Your Guide to Botox for Men
Botox has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic use since 2002. Since then, the minimally-invasive procedure has been very popular among women who are looking to minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
But what about men? The procedure is finally becoming mainstream for men as well. Over half a million men in the United States are getting Botox injections every year.
Is Botox Popular Among Men?
While women getting Botox still dominate the market, the trend of men getting the injections is increasing more and more every year. Botox is currently one of the most popular anti-aging treatments for men.
But what is it that is causing men to consider Botox? Some of the factors include:
Workplace competitiveness
Many men are motivated to get Botox to maintain their competitiveness against their younger co-workers. They feel like a more youthful appearance will allow them to get ahead in the workplace.
Social media
The rise of social media and online dating apps may also be the reason for the increasing trend. Social media almost guarantees people are going to compare themselves to others and that can mean men want to look their best in their online profiles.
Encouragement from significant other
Some men may be motivated to get cosmetic procedures for their significant other or partner. Men may want to look their best for the person they love.
What Are the Most Popular Treatment Areas For Men?
One of the reasons men are getting Botox is to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the face. But where are they getting the treatment done?
The most common places men get Botox is:
- the corners of the eyes to prevent crow’s feet
- between the eyebrows to target frown lines
- in the forehead to reduce creases and wrinkles
- around the mouth to target laugh lines
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is injected into the muscles of the face and works by blocking the signals from the nervous system to the muscles. The signals tell the muscles to contract and by blocking it, your muscles stay relaxed. It’s this relaxation that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The effects of Botox are usually visible within 1-4 days after the injection. You may have slight bruising, redness, or swelling after the procedure but that will fade within a few days.
After your injections, you’ll want to avoid strenuous physical activity and alcohol for at least 24 hours.
You will see full results about 1-2 weeks after the injections when the Botox reaches its peak effect. Botox typically lasts between 3-4 months and at that point, you can go in for maintenance injections to ensure you keep your youthful appearance.
