CoolTone: What it is and how it works

Posted on November 25, 2019

CoolTone is a new treatment for creating a more toned, firm, athletic appearance. Created by the same company that makes CoolSculpt, CoolTone is a device that strengthens muscles, resulting in a more toned and athletic appearance. The device looks like a large box with an attached computer screen, which allows the technician to monitor the procedure, and a wand, which is slowly moved along the body. CoolTone is typically used to contour the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and buttocks.

How does CoolTone work?
CoolTone utilizes a technology called Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS). This stimulates the muscles through electromagnetic energy, causing involuntary contractions. Because of these contractions, the muscles become stronger and firmer. The process targets muscles deeper than what is possible through traditional exercise, so even the most athletic patients can potentially benefit from CoolTone.

The CoolTone procedure

During the CoolTone procedure, deep muscle contractions are stimulated by the device. Patients usually describe the sensation as similar to a muscle spasm, which is not painful. The entire process can be completed in about thirty minutes. Most patients choose to repeat the treatment in order to achieve the best results. There is no associated downtime, and patients can immediately return to work or other regular activities.

After the procedure, some patients experience minor redness in the treated area and temporary muscle spasms. It’s typical to experience some soreness in the muscles or joints as well, typical to what you might feel after a very intense workout.

Who is a candidate for CoolTone?

Most healthy adults are candidates for the CoolTone procedure. It’s best for those who eat healthy diets and exercise regularly, but are looking for further definition that they can’t achieve through regular workouts. Patients dealing with excess skin or fat deposits may be suited to other treatments. For example, it is possible to combine CoolTone with CoolSculpt, which removes fat cells.

Some patients are not candidates for CoolTone due to other health concerns. For example, the device should not be used over metal or electronic implants. Before your CoolTone appointment, Dr. Kalimullah or Dr. Cavanaugh will help you determine if it is a safe and suitable treatment during a consultation.
