What is CoolSculpting and Does it Work?

Posted on June 25, 2020

CoolSculpting is an increasingly popular option for body contouring, with many patients enjoying the results of the noninvasive procedure. However, many people who are interested in the procedure may still be skeptical of whether or not CoolSculpting really works. CoolSculpting is FDA-approved to remove fat from many areas of the body, but if you’re unsure, learn more about what the procedure is and how it works before trying it for yourself.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive and non-surgical method of reducing fat and contouring the body. Patients should remember that CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss procedure, but instead helps to create a slimmer, more toned appearance in the abdomen, back, flanks, hips, thighs, or other treatment areas.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting works through a process called cryolipolysis. The skin of the treatment area is vacuumed into the CoolSculpting applicator, which cools the fat cells to a freezing temperature. This freezes and destroys fat cells, and the damaged fat cells are then naturally metabolized and removed from the body. The CoolSculpting procedure removes about 25% of fat cells from the treatment area. Most patients have multiple sessions of the treatment, with each session lasting about an hour.

Who is a Candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is best for candidates who have some stubborn fat deposits and want to create a more toned body contour, but are otherwise healthy and at or near their ideal weight. CoolSculpting is not considered a weight loss procedure and isn’t a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise. It’s also best for those with elastic, firm skin to ensure that the patient isn’t left with loose skin following the procedure.

Is CoolSculpting Permanent?

CoolSculpting results are permanent, in the sense that the damaged fat cells are permanently removed from the body. It is possible to gain weight after having CoolSculpting, but because you cannot grow new fat cells, you will likely store more weight in other areas if this is to occur. To maintain your CoolSculpting results, and your health overall, be sure to prioritize a balanced diet and regular exercise.
